Drew Hawkins: On Racing, Sobriety & Community

PRO DIVISION | SOUTHERN INDIANA

Drew Hawkins is a competitive onewheel and EUC racer from Southern Indiana who finished 2nd in Onewheel Pro and 1st in EUC qualifiers at Oak City Shred Fest 6. He competes under USA FLT, the national sanctioning body for onewheel racing in the United States, and races in both the onewheel and EUC pro divisions. He drives 11 hours to race. He's planning a 25-hour drive for the West Coast circuit. He is openly sober and talks about it every chance he gets.

Who Is Drew Hawkins, the Onewheel Racer?

Drew Hawkins is a professional Onewheel and EUC racer based in Southern Indiana, competing in both disciplines under USA FLT and USA EUC. At Oak City Shred Fest 6, held in Raleigh, North Carolina and supported by Amped Electric Games, he qualified third in Onewheel Pro and finished second in finals. In EUC Men's Pro, he went fastest in qualifiers before finishing fourth in a chaotic final race.

He is open about his sobriety and uses his platform in the electric sports community to end the stigma around addiction.

How Drew Got Into EUC and Onewheel Racing

Hawkins grew up restless. He rode four-wheelers, played sports through high school, ran intramurals in college, and spent his free time rock climbing, hiking, and white water rafting. He needed to be moving, and he needed it to mean something.

When he found the electric sports community, it fit immediately. A sport that demanded full physical and mental presence, surrounded by people who wanted you to win in racing and in life.

Southern Indiana has no local race scene. No crew to train with, no nearby events. Just Hawkins, his wheel, and however many hours of highway it takes to get to a start line.

"For this community, I'm down to drive wherever. I'll drive 15 hours, 11 hours. I think next year I'm gonna put in the 25 hours for the West races."

Oak City Shred Fest 6: Race Results

The Onewheel finals included a strategic battle over the whale tail, a wooden jump feature on course. Hawkins had been rolling it conservatively in qualifiers, keeping his hand close to his chest. Other riders noticed and started popping it. By finals, the element of surprise was gone.

"Maybe next time I'll keep it in the bag until the very end."

In EUC, Hawkins went fastest in qualifiers and was fighting for the lead in finals when his foot didn't quite get in on a critical move. He finished fourth.

"You never really know what's gonna happen until it happens. That's why we practice. Gotta practice a little more."

Immediately after the race he was the first one up taking a photo of the winner. Ky Pelashe had been talking trash the night before, telling Hawkins he was coming for him. Hawkins told him no chance. Ky got him.

"I couldn't be more proud of him. I was the first one up there taking a picture of it."

How Drew Trains for Onewheel Racing

Hawkins doesn't show up to race and figure it out. His prep starts at least three months before a major event. He runs five days a week, lifts three times a week, watches his diet, and cuts weight. Lighter riders go faster and he knows it. He wears full gear every ride without exception. He works with a trainer and does yoga for flexibility.

"Shout out Johnny SainTellah for helping me get in shape, and for creating me some yoga, which is key for your flexibility out here."

His first year competing he didn't podium. He watched the riders who did and realized they weren't just riding more. They were training like athletes, working with coaches, building real physical discipline around their riding. He matched it. The results followed.

The Wheel, Sobriety, and Mental Health

There is a reason Hawkins talks about his wheel the way he does, and it goes beyond racing.

He is open about his sobriety and the role the wheel has played in it. He shouts out the No Shame Pledge, an organization working to end the stigma around addiction, and will have the conversation with anyone who needs to have it.

"When you're on that wheel, you can't really think about much else. You can just focus on what you're doing. If you don't, you're gonna run into trouble. Just like in real life."

What the wheel gave him was presence. Full, unavoidable presence. Every jump, every corner, every section of course demands that you're actually there. For Hawkins, that quality of attention turned out to be exactly what he needed.

"It's one of the best outlet tools and mental health tools I've ever found."

He recommends it alongside therapy and other support for anyone struggling with addiction. He shows up at events as someone willing to be that conversation.

"You are who you surround yourself with. And there's a lot of people out here in this community that not only want you to win in racing, but they want you to win in life."

On the Future of USA FLT and Electric Sports

Hawkins has watched the sport grow from its early days into a formalized competitive circuit under USA FLT, and he feels the difference that structure makes.

"I really feel like an athlete now. We've been seeking that organization for a long time, something to keep us organized and make it feel more official. And this is the next step."

He sees grandstands one day. Fans watching doubles get cleared on a motocross track. The kind of production that pulls in outside attention and turns casual observers into fans.

He'll be going for the triple.
